In an executive order, Trump says "I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil" and due to those purchases, imports of Indian goods into the United States "shall be subject to an additional ... rate of duty of 25%."

Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian oil imports from Russia, alleging India is a major purchaser, similar to China. He threatened further sanctions and hinted at potential tariffs on China for the same reason.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday he will not compromise the interests of the country's farmers even if he has to pay a heavy price for it, in his first comments after U.S. President Donald Trump's salvo of a 50% tariff on Indian goods.
