Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence start-up xAI says it is in the process of removing "inappropriate" posts by Grok on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, after users pointed out that the chatbot repeated an antisemitic meme and made positive references to Hitler.

Social media posts on the X account of the Grok chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI were removed on Tuesday after complaints from X users and the Anti-Defamation League that Grok produced content with antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler.

The incident coincided with a broader meltdown for Grok, which also posted antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler, sparking outrage and renewed scrutiny of Musk’s approach to AI moderation. Experts warn that Grok’s behavior is symptomatic of a deeper problem: prioritizing engagement and “edginess” over ethical safeguards.

In response, X mostly turned off Grok, and the chatbot’s official account claimed that “xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X.” The next day, CEO Linda Yaccarino announced she was stepping down but also leaked that of course it had nothing to do with the platform’s omnipresent assistant calling for genocide.
