The New York Times reported that a similar spread of garbage washed ashore in Ocean City, Maryland and Dewey Beach, Delaware, which is 28 miles south of Cape May Point as the crow flies but local swimmers are safe for now.

“The Chincoteague Public Beach in the Virginia unit has been added to the Closure List,” they said in an update. “All Ocean Facing Beaches at Assateague Island National Seashore are now closed to swimming or wading due to medical waste coming ashore.”

Water access was restricted Sunday afternoon at Ocean City and surrounding beaches after officials say a “significant” amount of medical waste had washed ashore.

Officials warned people to stay out of the ocean at several beaches in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia after they said medical waste washed ashore.

Multiple stretches of beaches along the coast of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia are closed until further notice due to needles and other medical waste washing ashore, officials said.
