The San Francisco 49ers search for a new defensive coordinator has not necessarily gotten off the ground. Robert Saleh is seen as the top candidate.

Saleh previously served as San Francisco's defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, where his leadership was instrumental in the team's Super Bowl run during the 2019 season.

Townsend is a former longtime Steelers cornerback who has managed secondaries across the NFL over the last decade. He has been a defensive backs coach for the Titans (2016-17), Giants (2018, assistant), Bears (2019-21), Jaguars (2022-23) and Lions (2024). The last two stops have included duties as the defensive passing game coordinator.

Robert Saleh was the first to have his name called and he is set to interview later this week. Leslie Frazier and Kellen Moore have also popped up at the onset of the early interview process.
