President Trump signed a funding bill that keeps the government open through September, averting a shutdown after a drama-filled week on Capitol Hill.

A partial government shutdown was avoided Friday when the Senate approved a bill to keep the government funded through the end of September. Senators sent the bill to President Donald Trump’s desk for approval in a 54-46 vote.

The latest news on President Donald Trump’s administration and the expected Senate vote on a continuing resolution to avert a government shutdown.

"Literally zero Senate Democrats support the filibuster. 38 voted to filibuster the continuing resolution yesterday," wrote former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., on X. "8 who previously voted to eliminate the filibuster (1/19/22) did not filibuster.

The plan would avert a government shutdown but give Donald Trump and Elon Musk more power over spending, sparking fierce backlash among Democrats.

The advance vote: The Senate voted 62-38 to end debate on the bill – a cloture vote – and advance it to a final vote. Nine Democrats and one independent, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., voted in favor of cloture. That vote allowed the bill to pass with a simple majority in the final vote.
