These mysterious whitish-gray glows in the northern lights might be cousins of the mauve light streak known as STEVE.
"You'd see this structured—almost like a patch—grey-toned or white toned-emission connected to the aurora," said researcher Emma Spanswick.
Scientists believe the glow could be the result of unique chemical changes triggered by the energy from the auroras.
