A dozen House Republicans on Tuesday helped their Democratic colleagues bypass House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and force a vote to allow House members to vote by proxy for up to three months after having children.

Johnson and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who are both from Louisiana, said Trump personally played a big role in accomplishing both legislative wins.

The stopgap measure would keep the government funded through Sept. 30. But Democratic leaders are opposed, and it’s unclear if Johnson can pass it with only Republicans.
