Colorado Democrats needed all four remaining Senate contests to swing their way to gain a supermajority in the state Senate. At 11:49 a.m. on Thursday, AP called state Senate district 15 for Republican Marc Catlin over his Democratic opponent, Cole Buerger. Catlin bested Buerger by about 4%, or 3,500 votes.

Colorado Republicans denied Democrats a supermajority in the state Senate. But Democrats were likely to renew their large edge in the House.

The Democrat-favoring partisan balance in the Colorado Legislature will look similar to the previous two years, based on early results from Tuesday’s election, though a couple of races remain too close to call as of publication time.

Sen. James Coleman, a Denver Democrat, will lead the Colorado state Senate as its president after Tuesday’s elections affirmed the party’s large majority in the chamber.

James Coleman, who has been serving as the Colorado Senate president pro tempore, ran unopposed for the position.

On Friday Senate Democrats gathered over Zoom — a change necessitated by the snowstorm sitting over the Front Range — to select new leaders for the upcoming legislative session. House Democrats will meet on Monday in the hopes that the few outstanding races will be called by then.
