South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley was one of the stars of the Sting during her playing days. She played seven seasons in Charlotte and was four-time WNBA All-Star, averaging 8.9 points and 5.4 assists per game all while still coaching at Temple.

News of the bid comes less than two weeks after Florida-based Zawyer Sports & Entertainment disclosed plans for a new women’s basketball league that will debut in 2026 with a Charlotte club as well as a team in Greensboro. The Charlotte team will play at Bojangles Coliseum.

Charlotte Hornets owners Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall are throwing their support behind efforts to bring WNBA basketball back to the Queen City through a bid to revive the Charlotte Sting franchise.
