ABINGTON — Gov. Josh Shapiro visited the SPS Technologies site on Saturday, days after a massive fire ripped through the manufacturing plant, forcing school closures, mass transit disruption and evacuation of nearby homes amid air quality concerns.

Officials said they are working to get hotspots extinguished and begin their investigation, but said to do so, they will have to demolish part of the building.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection tested water in the Tookany Creek and found small quantities of "chemicals of concern" immediately downstream of the facility.

The tactical response by our firefighters prevented what could have been a mass casualty incident,” said Abington Township Police Chief Patrick Molloy.
