The Derby Fire, burning in steep terrain north of Dotsero in the White River National Forest, has prompted evacuation orders in the area of Sweetwater Lake and a complete closure of Colorado River Road.

The Derby Fire, located north of Dotsero in White River National Forest grew to 839 acres Tuesday evening, according to the Watch Duty app. The measurement is more than three times the 245 acre estimation Tuesday evening. The Derby Fire grew significantly overnight according to fire officials. The fire near Dotsero has burned 839 acres and has not been contained yet. Evacuations for residents near the fire were ordered on the morning of August 20th, 2025. More information on the evacuations can be found here.

The two fires are called the Derby Fire, located in Eagle County near Garfield County, and the La Plata Fire, located in Chaffee and Lake counties in the Pike-San Isabel National Forests.
