Amazon could finally be ditching its proprietary software on Fire tablets, according to a report by Reuters. The company is reportedly prepping a higher-end tablet that'll run on Android. This device could come next year and will reportedly cost around $400.
The multiyear project to switch to Android marks a philosophical change for the online retail giant, which has eschewed third-party operating systems and software in favor of its own. As a result, Amazon has offered its own app store requiring developers to make separate versions of their apps for Fire tablets, limiting the store’s variety.
For app developers, Fire OS has created an added burden, requiring them to create separate, and often less-profitable, versions of their apps for Amazon's ecosystem. This has led to a much smaller app library compared to the Google Play Store.
