A major earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 has triggered a tsunami warning for the southern Alaska peninsula.

Communities along a 700-mile (1,127-km) stretch of Alaska’s southern coast ordered residents to higher ground after a powerful offshore earthquake Wednesday, but officials quickly downgraded and then canceled a tsunami warning for the region.

A rare tsunami warning was issued for part of Alaska’s coast after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck near Sand Point in the Aleutian Islands. A small tsunami wave was measured at Sand Point, Alaska.
